As we shopped online, a part of me felt so joyful and proactive about such a tangible display of hopefulness, not just to the outside world but to myself. Surely if I had all of these goodies for her—baby clothes, washtub, swing—she would be here to use them. I kept ignoring the practical and sad little voice in my head that said the risk wasn’t so great in buying these things; you could always return her stuff if she doesn’t make it.

It was a terrible feeling to simultaneously experience the joy, excitement, and expectation of a new baby tempered with the looming fear and possible reality that she may not live. But she felt so good, so alive inside of me, moving around in my womb like my other girls had.
